Hostel etiquette for the young budget traveler

When you go traveling, you are bound to get all types of lodging facilities, from a small hostel to a 5-star international hotel. It is great to be living in a 5-star room with all the amenities at the click of a button. But, if you are a budget traveler, and have limited funds kept aside for boarding, hostels are the best option for you. However, if you are going to stay in a hostel, be ready to sleep in close quarters with 4 or even 40 people! You never know, you could even be unlucky enough to get a snorer by your side on a squeaky bunk bed with the person on top tossing and turning every other minute. Given below are some basic tips and guidelines that would ensure that your stay at a hostel (whatever the country may be) is pleasant and a little less annoying -

Follow the Rules - Many hostels have predefined rules they expect their guests to abide by. The rules could as simple as not using kitchen after 9pm or specific timings for playing loud music. Read the manual before you check into a hostel. There is no point in moving with bag and baggage if you regret the rules later. You will end up spending more money in shifting to another hostel.

Respect the fellow tourists - Every other individual in the hostel room you share happens to be a tourist too. You cannot expect them to behave in a certain way. They may have habits which could be pleasant or annoying. If you show respect, you get respect. If you are courteous to your fellow tourists, a stay at the hostel could be pleasant and much more enriching than you could ever imagine. After all, traveling is not only limited to exploring new places, but also knowing new people and what makes them different from the rest.

Establish sleeping schedules - When you first meet your fellow tourists, try and find out their bed timings. If you are a nocturnal person, you wouldn't want to wake someone up with your fidgeting or keeping the lights on. Likewise, if the fellow roomies happen to be early risers you can get a quiet place in the room, so that you aren't disturbed.

Clear the clutter - Yes, hostels don't have maids. Hence, if you make a mess, you have to clean up too. You have to do the dishes after dinner. Besides, you wouldn't like other tourists to leave a mess for you, so avoid doing the same.

Food is not free - Hostels usually have refrigerators installed in every room for the convenience of the travelers. Since other guests also keep their food in the fridge, they would appreciate if you don't eat it, or else, ask them before you do. It is a common rule of courtesy that every individual is expected to follow.

As mentioned earlier, since you are a traveler, you are bound to meet travelers from varied countries. Every traveler is going to have different beliefs and habits. Keep an open mind and you will be able to enjoy your trip. Living in a hostel could sound very annoying but as they as they. if you want the rainbow, you have to put up with a little rain!
